So You're Gay (continued from page 3)
develops immediate positive feelings?
I do feel there are also long-term rewards involved in maintaining an open gay-straight relationship. Persistent isolation of either group leads to narrowmindedness and self-destruction. To counteract this, communication between the two groups is necessary. Without the burden of discrimination, it is easier for the straight woman to hreak down existing barriers. From my own experience I have been readily accepted in my friend's gay community. However, I know the majority of my straight women friends have preconceived ideas of lesbians which prevents their accepting them. Under these circumstances, it is not difficult to understand the tendency toward separateness on the gay woman's part. Anyone would want to be around people who know and understand them.
For this reason I am expressing my feelings of joy and thankfulness in having my friend. I hope this may precipitate a change in some straight women's pre-existing ideas of lesbianism, so that when you encounter a lesbian, whether it's someone new or an old friend, relax and stay with her and try to understand what she is all about.
I have requested anonymity in order to honor the confidence of my friendship.
